Living Well, Staying Connected: How Better Lives Support Services Helps the Gippsland Disability Community Thrive

Independence looks different for everyone. For some, it’s having a trusted support worker help with the everyday tasks that make life easier. For others, it’s having somewhere to go every Friday, a friendly face, and a strong sense of belonging within the local disability community. And for many, it’s simply knowing the people supporting them are locals who genuinely understand Gippsland. At Better Lives Support Services, all three of these come together — personalised care, community connection, and local trust — to help NDIS participants across Gippsland exercise real choice and control over their own lives.

For many NDIS participants, the biggest barrier to independence isn’t ability — it’s access to consistent, reliable support that respects the person’s own choices. Daily and weekly personal care assistance closes that gap. Whether it’s help getting ready in the morning, support with meal preparation, medication reminders, or simply having someone check in during the week, these small, consistent touchpoints add up to a much bigger sense of stability and self-determination.

What makes this kind of support work isn’t just the tasks being completed — it’s the relationship behind them. A support worker who shows up at the same time each week, learns your routines, and understands your preferences becomes more than a service provider. Within the disability community, this shift is well recognised: moving from feeling like you’re “being cared for” to feeling like you’re “being supported to live life on your own terms” — and that distinction matters enormously for dignity, agency and self-determination.

Take, as an example, the kind of story that plays out again and again across the disability community: someone who has been managing alone for months, perhaps after a health setback or a change in circumstances, finally accepts regular support. At first there’s hesitation — a common, understandable fear of losing independence by asking for help. But within a few weeks, the pattern usually reverses. Having someone reliably assist with the physically demanding or time-consuming parts of the day frees up energy for the things that actually matter: hobbies, family, culture, or simply resting without guilt.

Flexibility is a core part of what makes this support effective, and it’s something the disability community consistently asks for. Some participants need daily assistance; others just need a few hours a week to stay on top of things. Because Better Lives Support Services is locally owned and operated in the Gippsland area, scheduling can be organised around real, local circumstances — school terms, medical appointments, weather-affected travel, or simply a participant’s own energy levels on a given day — rather than a rigid, centralised system that doesn’t understand local realities.

Ultimately, personal care assistance isn’t just about ticking off tasks on a support plan. It reflects the social model of disability at its best: recognising that with the right support in place, barriers fall away and people are free to direct their own lives. Participants aren’t just “getting by” — they’re building routines, confidence and momentum toward the goals that matter most to them.
